A new release this time, but one worthy of time and discussion. Jesse’s mad underrated - constantly weaving tight kicks and crispy snares between gorgeous soul-tinged vocals, slap bass and sunny guitars that hark back to the grimy instrumental sounds of the 90s. I feel like in a similar vein to OLASEGUN, his beats sound dusty but hold patterns that feel really modern, like a vivid portal between the past and the present. Most of all, the beats take me to a certain place - I’ve never been to NY but can imagine this is what riding a cold subway feels like, or walking packed streets with the heat blaring off the pavement. Synchronicity finds balance between the two seperate seasons, like listening to an instrumental collab between Mobb Deep and Boogie Down Productions. I don’t want to describe the sound as much as the sentiment it holds, a feeling I get with all Jesse’s tapes - the music coming from a dude who clearly lives and breathes this environment and lays it all down on wax, no more so than on the latest tape.
KEY BEAT: Synchronicity_ - for a tape so vintage, this one feels like a bit of an outlier with the little hits of metallic percs and the way the stretched vocals warp in and out. It feels like classic Flylo and it’s one of my favourite from Jesse so far.
