Kosey ! - Everything

A peachy sky sitting behind clouds when the day is done - that’s exactly what this tape sounds like. Apart from being an all-around awesome person and a supporter of such a wide array of scenes and the musicians within, Ko’s been steady dropping little beat tapes and instrumental detours since 2022, as well as a new endeavour into rap last year that I hope she explores more of. But Everything is my favourite from her so far - knitting together tightly-woven drum patterns and microchopped samples cut to create a new sample entirely. Between chops, these drums weave in and out of the melodies but stay strong like a heartbeat - kicks sometimes grounded and sometimes scattered, snares rolling but sometimes bursting through the mix with reverb. But it’s in the little slivers of samples that my heart wants to keep returning to this tape, sometimes blending harmony and cuts of spoken word on ‘Later’, or layering the triumphant trumpets of ‘Never Occurred’ with the first phonic of a vocal so all you’re hearing is the “le le le.” Despite only being her third tape, these techniques are really masterfully performed all over ‘Everything,’, with such a meticulous level of detail only allowing us to peer into the passion she has for this music - doing it all for the love.

KEY BEAT: Everything - those peachy clouds I was describing from earlier? The title track exemplifies that image perfectly, where swung drums and a beautiful string section work in harmony.
