After knxwledge and ohbliv I think fuzzy might’ve been one of the first dudes in soulhop I listened to. I remember getting into his music (and many other great artists) through @apolloharp’s series of playlists where one of these tracks would’ve landed. Just like a lot of fuzzy’s other early stuff, this tape is bedded in really crunchy drums, sometimes cacophonous but well-placed, over beautiful slabs of funk and rnb where striking vocal chops and hits of bass combine. fuzzy has this ability to create completely new cadences in a sample with where the kicks are set, especially on a song like Haunt, where I can’t even imagine what the original vocal line would’ve sounded like. It’s such a simple but effective tool that gives these songs a warped but crazy bounce. Although I’ve always had a couple favourites from this, the more I’ve grown with the tape over the years the more I’ve loved it, almost every track gliding into the next with a new groove and flavour. I’m infinitely thankful for having found his music through that playlist years ago, and can’t imagine what the community would be like without him.
KEY BEAT: Falling - I can’t find it but an old YT visual for this song showed a retro-tinged rollerblading rink with sparkly skaters dancing round and round in a loop, which I think is exactly what this song sounds like. It’s got such a nice sense of air and gravity to it, and you mentally feel like you’re gliding along in the same way.
