DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ - Destiny

After a brief hiatus, I’m so proud to be back to talk about one of my favourite records in a long long time, Destiny.

The legendary DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ has returned once more with a lengthy, nostalgia-filled, thumping, synthing and saxing monster of a plunderphonics record which is every bit as good as her 2020 masterpiece Charmed, if not better.

In her attempt to create a sister album to Charmed, she’s somehow been able to expand on the fantasy-filled universe she’s created, and make the imagery, atmosphere and emotions only more vivid.

To describe the music on display over this 4hrs is an impossible feat in only a few sentences. Always underpinned by kick drums or 808 patterns, Destiny’s gorgeous chord progressions and sugary but powerful vocal embellishments create an experience nothing short of kalaidescopic. With smooth transitions and incredible pacing, the result is a flurry of magical sounds and emotions, all combined to conjure a world I just don’t want to leave when I’m in it. There are short lulls in the tracklist to give you a well-needed breather, only for Sabrina to hit you with another string of emotion-packed hard-hitting bangers.

Rather than detailing the music or the songs within it, I really want to describe how the music makes me feel. It reminds me to take it easy, and not take any music or art too seriously (even when I love it to death). It definitely reminds me that happiness is something I look for in music and should always be something worth searching for. And most of all, I think DJ Sabrina’s music ignites a certain innocence and unbridled joy in me that I hope I never lose.

KEY TRACK: Doubts - this has slowly turned into one of my all-time favourite Sabrina songs. It’s beautifully paced, and almost every element of it sounds like it was sent from the heavens. From the twinkling keys and soft piano blocks in the back, to that amazing synth breakdown in the middle of the track, this song is just perfect to me. Everytime I hear that “whenever you need me” vocal line I lose my mind.
