The king of dubstep went absolutely bonkers on this one. An EP that can truly define a generation as well as a clear turn of decade, this is a project that’s very near and dear to my heart. I remember a family friend played this to me while we were goofing around on a trampoline in Year 7, and my mind was absolutely blown - reflecting the constantly buzzing and jittery electronica that I loved from acts like Justice, the use of very fine microhouse-esque sampling (that I would later love more broadly) - this EP sat a cross-section for kids who simultaneously wanted to cry and rave. Points of this EP made me question (and still make me question) how the hell Mr Skrill even thought of these particular sounds, and especially how to arrange them - there was a serious craft behind this which amplified the music beyond meme-level. While this project may not hit quite like it used to for me, there are moments that are so goofy and brilliant I can’t not smile.
KEY TRACK: Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites - everyone from bowl cuts to mohawks loved this song, and it still slaps like it came out yesterday. The way that squelchy bass sounds after the drop is bloody masterful.
