Like a sweaty dancefloor with strobes streaming through a soft blue haze, disctr4k’s new album is one brief and blissful 42-minute party that ends with the slow rainy walk home. Despite transitioning from hiphop to house earlier in the decade, their new work still carries all the same qualities as tapemusic; crispy punchy drums wrapped in a raw aesthetic, thick basslines and therapeutic vocals touching the project’s titular inner core. It “sparkles” and explodes from the start, percussion flying at a breakneck pace and moods setting and shifting from track-to-track. Just when you feel like you can’t dance any longer, the interlude brings a much needed reprieve, moving masterfully between quick hits of Timbo-inspired dance pop to expertly-crafted jungle. In its final moments, the project settles into a soft disco and a bittersweet end, rim clicks and metallic hihats walking you home. The album is an amalgamation of so many styles I love, but one that disctr4k clearly designed to be listened to in full. Press play and unwind, but only moments later you’ll be out of your seat again.
KEY TRACK: tryin’ to be - the slow and steady run of this project’s bouncing first half all lead up to this moment: one of the best house cuts I’ve heard in a long time.
