Heyes - mixtape of music i made in late 2021 and most of 2022

Despite being a good friend, a great supporter of the page and a self-proclaimed legend, I absolutely loved the new megamix from Heyes. Beyond its individual components, Heyes always manages to gel things in a way that always feels either natural or intriguing, always encompassing a wiry and synthetic quality to its transitions and the music within, taking you down a real rabbithole throughout.

I love the use of microsampling all over this thing, reminding me of some of my favourite microhouse music from Justice and Akufen, for example. On here you’ll find percussion and textures that would fit snugly on a Flume tune, or a certain woozy and mesmerising atmosphere that invokes the same feeling as some of Clams Casino’s best beats. I love that Heyes wears his influences on his sleeve and wears them proudly.

I also felt like I was constantly kept on the edge of my seat with this, presenting some moments of choppy finite beat work and some larger more drawn-out moments that almost act as checkpoints throughout the mix. Unpredictable moments like when Heyes turns the round of applause into a straight slammer make you want to follow through to the very end.

A constantly unpredictable and invigorating megamix which offers a deep dive into the mind of self-proclaimed legend, Heyes.

KEY TRACK: Suffocating in a Black Hole - the title of this one wonderfully encapsulates the feeling of this track, even if it feels more blissfully transcendent than it does smothering. I love the way the different elements of the song fade in and out, never fully waning away but coming back in hard at moments of clarity.
